12th February 2010, COMEDY: Jonny Sweet

I'd heard of Jonny Sweet because he won the Newcomer Award at Edinburgh last year and he'd appeared in The In-Betweeners, a programme I'd seen once and found annoyingly childish. For his show, Sweet plays the character of a posh, innocent yet foolish man who's paying tribute to his departed brother. The character seemed to owe a certain amount to Rob Brydon's Keith from Marion & Geoff, certainly in his buffoon-like sayings and complete lack of self awareness anyway. Sweet was likable and played the part convincingly. It took a bit of getting used to but there were moments of brilliance, most of which came when Sweet used audience members as props. Overall though, I found, for the first time when watching comedy I have to say, that the comedy may have been aimed at an audience younger than me. His repeated catchphrases and goofing around seemed to go down well with the kids but left the other half of us alienated slightly.
