13th January 2010, FILM: White Ribbon

After a glowing recommendation from Mark Kermode on his Radio FiveLive podcast, I went along to see White Ribbon. A German film, shot entirely in black and white that focusses on a community in pre-1st World War Germany, this is a film full of tension. Bad things happen within the community but you're never really sure why. The film offers few answers to what it's all about or what is actually happening and somehow, this leaves you wanting more. And you're not really sure of why you want more either. As far as beautifully shot, gripping, serious films go, White Ribbon is right up there. It's not much fun, but it's hard not to be drawn into it's weird world.
